Gov. Sarah Sanders, GOP governors vow to use National Guard for Trump's mass deportations

• With 26 governors vowing to help, that gives Trump the promised cooperation of a majority of U.S. states — including those with some of the largest populations of undocumented people.

Reality check: These mass deportations will also likely face several procedural roadblocks and the estimated $150 billion to $350 billion price tag to execute them is steep.

Yes, but: The letter from the Republican Governors Association said, "We stand ready to utilize every tool at our disposal" and "we will do everything in our power to assist in removing them from our communities."

• The joint statement clarifies the "them" as "illegal immigrants who pose a threat to our communities and national security" and "dangerous criminals, gang members, and terrorists."

By the numbers: It's estimated that 2.3% of the state's population in 2021 were undocumented, roughly 60,000 people.

What they're saying: A spokesperson for Sanders did not respond to questions about how state law enforcement plans to identify and deport immigrants who are in the state illegally, and if it would target all undocumented immigrants or only those convicted or charged with a crime.

• They also didn't answer questions about the costs and potential impact to the state's agricultural economy.

"President Trump won in a landslide because of his promise to clean up the Biden-Harris Administration's failures, including on the southern border, and Governor Sanders looks forward to working with the Trump Administration to make our country safe and strong again," the spokesperson said in an email to Axios.

Between the lines: Arkansas law permits trained law enforcement officers to make an arrest "in order to enforce federal immigration laws."

What we're watching: Arkansas joined 15 other states in a lawsuit to block a program that protects undocumented people married to U.S. citizens from deportation in August.
