President-elect Trump said he nominated former Republican Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee to be the U.S. Ambassador to Israel on Tuesday.

Why it matters: The challenge of Israel's multi-front war and the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East will soon fall to Trump, writes Axios' Barak Ravid.

The U.S. ambassador will be a key adviser in navigating peace and a growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Huckabee, an evangelical Christian, has been a supporter of Israel for years, making frequent visits to the country.

What they're saying: "He loves Israel and the people of Israel, and likewise the people of Israel love him," Trump tweeted.

"Mike will work tirelessly to bring about Peace in the Middle East!"

Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Huckabee's daughter, tweeted: "There is no one President Trump could have picked with a greater love for the Israeli people and commitment to the unbreakable bond between America and Israel than him. Love you dad!"
