Sam's Furniture hosts free mattress recycling event

• It's estimated about 30,000 are thrown out in Benton and Washington counties each year, and the landfill in Tontitown could be at its capacity in 10-15 years.

State of play: Households are limited to one mattress set and will receive a coupon valued up to $1,000 off a new mattress purchased at Sam's Furniture.

• The bedding will be transported by the Benton County Solid Waste District where it will be dismantled by Victory Mission in Springfield, Missouri.

Mattresses can be dropped off Friday from 10am-7pm, Saturday 9am-7pm and Sunday noon-5pm.

The bottom line: It costs about $22 to harvest the steel, wood and foam from a mattress.
