Kamala Harris launches the second part of her book tour Tuesday at the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans as she makes clear that she's working to keep another White House campaign viable.
The latest: It'll be Harris' second Saenger appearance in as many days, after the former vice president led Helena Moreno's mayoral oath of office Monday.
What she's saying: "The future of America is being built in cities like this and in leaders who honor the past, meet the present moment and invest in the future, by leaders who believe the power belongs with the people," Harris said during Monday's inauguration.
- "That is the kind of leadership Helena Moreno brings to this moment. Helena, I know you will be a mayor who will lead with integrity, with courage and with the people of New Orleans always at the center of your work."
The big picture: Despite worries from party leaders and donors that she can't win, Harris remains at or near the top of most 2028 Democratic primary polls.
- She also has strong support among Black voters — the most critical voting bloc in most recent Democratic presidential primaries.
Zoom in: After lying low in early 2025, Harris embarked on the first part of her book tour to promote "107 Days." Then, she made late December moves that many Democrats saw as the beginnings of a 2028 campaign.
- Among them, her book tour expanded. Besides the New Orleans stop, which is produced in partnership with Black-owned bookstore Baldwin & Co., early stops include the historically critical primary state of South Carolina and cities with many Black voters, including Detroit, Jackson, Miss., Memphis, Tenn., and Montgomery, Ala.
- She also mingled with national party officials and state party chairs during the Democratic National Committee's winter meeting.
