Flood insurance discounts coming for part of Jefferson Parish

How it works: The FEMA-backed National Flood Insurance Program grades communities on flood mitigation and water management plans that go beyond the program-required minimum, according to a Jefferson Parish press release.

• Those grades result in community-wide discounts on insurance premiums sold through the NFIP.

Zoom in: By working on building codes, creating and improving existing water management plans and improving public information, unincorporated Jefferson Parish improved its rating from Class 5 to Class 3, the press release says.

Between the lines: With the change, unincorporated Jefferson Parish is now the only community in Louisiana to have such a high rating.
