Ochsner Health is partnering with the New Orleans Saints and the New Orleans Pelicans to build a new sports medicine complex in Metairie, according to a press release.
Why it matters: While the facility will support recovery and treatment for the professional teams that practice next door, the care offered there will also be publicly accessible.
The big picture: The pro teams' owner, Gayle Benson, extended a partnership with Ochsner Health earlier this year, and the new facility is a part of that, the press release says.
- Formally titled the Ochsner Medical Complex - Airline, the $45.6 million complex will be located on the corner of Airline Drive and Tom Benson Way, next to the facility where both teams practice.
- Construction of the 46,000-square-foot, two-story building will also include a new retention pond to help manage drainage, a press release says.
Zoom in: James Andrews, a respected "doctor to the superstars" who former Saints quarterback Drew Brees credits with saving his career, will also be a part of the new facility's services and design.
- The care offered at the new complex will include orthopedics and sports medicine for professional and amateur athletes.
- Its first phase will focus on pediatrics, women's services, physical therapy, imaging and lab services, with a planned second phase to add outpatient surgical capabilities and other services.
- It's being developed by Catalyst, a health-focused real estate and investment firm.
What she's saying: "Job creation, commerce and building projects that produce economic development are important to me and we are proud of what Ochsner Medical Complex – Airline will bring to our community," Benson said in a press release, referring to the estimated $134 million economic impact over its first decade and more than 60 permanent jobs the facility is expected to bring.
What's next: Construction is due to begin later this year, the press release says.
