New Orleans is putting on a free, family-friendly New Year's Eve block party in the French Quarter, complete with a fleur-de-lis drop.
The big picture: Tarriona "Tank" Ball will headline the new event on Decatur Street called "New Orleans Eve," officials announced Tuesday.
- She's also the voice on the city's new commercial for the holidays.
Zoom in: The party will be on Decatur Street in front of Jackson Square from 9pm to midnight, said Emily Madero with French Quarter Festivals Inc. The group is partnering with neworleans.com to put on the event.
- At midnight, the fleur-de-lis will drop on the Jax Brewery building, and there will be fireworks.
- New Orleans hosts the Allstate Sugar Bowl parade earlier the same day, and officials tell Axios they've worked out the logistics since the block party is on the route.
- The game itself will be the following day at the Caesars Superdome.
Catch up quick: Allstate used to host a free Fan Fest on New Year's Eve with music in the parking lot of Jax Brewery.
- It went away after COVID, a spokesperson told Axios last year.
- It was part of "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" for several years. It's unclear if a national TV outlet will broadcast from New Orleans this year, says Kelly Schulz with New Orleans & Co.
Fun fact: New Orleans used to drop a king cake baby for New Year's, but the diaper-clad mascot was retired years ago.
- It's now on display at the Southern Food & Beverage Museum.
