Pickles are having a moment right now, and we're happy to see them in creative concoctions on New Orleans menus.
Why it matters: Pickles are — ahem — a big dill.
The big picture: Food prognosticators picked pickles as a food trend for 2024, and it looks like they got it right.
- Manufacturers are making limited edition pickle-flavored items. Candy-wrapped pickles are trending. And pickles are skyrocketing in popularity on GrubHub.
- And, there's pickle beer.
In New Orleans, Sneaky Pickle in the Bywater introduced a pickle brine martini ($10) for its summer menu.
- It's made with pickled gin, pickle brine, dry vermouth, lemon oil and dill. The garnish is a crunchy pickle, salty olive and vinegary cocktail onion.
Pickle plates: Housemade pickles are offered as an appetizer at several restaurants too.
- Sneaky Pickle, The Chloe, Toups' Meatery, suis generis, St. James Cheese Co. and The Will & The Way all have their own version.
Pickle poboy: Pickle sandwiches are taking over TikTok, so you know New Orleans has to get in on that action.
- On the North Shore, a seafood boil pickle poboy has been gaining steam thanks to creator Tasha Buras AKA @thecurlycreole.
- Bayou Boil-n-Geaux in Mandeville uses a sliced, spicy pickle instead of a bun, fills it with meat and cheese and serves it with honey mustard.
- "Ima finish this in private," Buras says in a review video as transcendent music plays.
