Tigers gymnast Kaytlyn (KJ) Johnson is riding high into her senior year at LSU.
Driving the news: Coming off an injury-riddled 2023 season, the all-arounder bounced back and helped the Tigers win their first-ever national championship.
What she's saying: Axios caught up with Johnson, a Dallas native, and discussed what she's up to this summer, the culture at LSU and her favorite spots in Baton Rouge.
This interview has been edited for clarity.
What she's been up to this summer: "Early on, I took a break from from gymnastics and let my body calm down."
- "Lately, I've been [at the gym] working on some more routines and upgrading some skills."
Life on campus after winning the national title: "I felt like a celebrity. We all got tons of compliments. We had a parade, and our team was invited to several events."
- "Haleigh [Bryant] got to throw the first pitch for one of the baseball games, and [head coach] Jay [Clark] threw one of the pitches too. It was fun."
- "LSU did an amazing job of recognizing that we won."
Her favorite Baton Rouge restaurants: "Walk On's is a really fun place throughout our season."
- "Once we finish a competition, a lot of the times they will open up the outdoor section and all of our family and teammates will go there after the meets, and they have really good food. "
- "We take a lot of our recruits to The Chimes. They give you a wide variety of food options that give you a background of the culture and the type of food that Louisiana has."
On being part of a golden age of LSU Athletics: "It's exciting to be at a really talented school where everyone has so much to [offer] from different sports."
- "I think it's really cool that we get to represent the three letters on our chest and compete at the D1 level. We've trained our entire lives for moments like these."
What it means to her that women's sports at LSU are driving that: "I'm so happy to be a part of it."
- "We get to show the world and our fans what women are capable of. "
