14 Parishes has a great Lenten fish fry special

A person holds up a styrofoam takeout clamshell filled with fried fish, a cornbread muffin, mac and cheese and cabbage. Potato salad is seen underneath the fish. A dog looks up at the food from the floor.

Lenten fish fries in New Orleans aren't just the stuff of church ladies and fundraisers.

  • Local restaurants get in on the action, too. And the one at 14 Parishes is one of the best I've had.

Dig in: Jamaican restaurant 14 Parishes has a location Uptown on Oak Street and a newly opened place in Algiers Point.

  • For Lent, the restaurant is offering a fish plate with a beautifully fried, golden catfish filet plus cabbage, potato salad, a cornbread muffin and mac and cheese.
  • The whole plate is $15 or, as my husband said, an absolute steal.

If you go: The fried fish special is available as takeout only, and you can order ahead online for the Uptown or Algiers location.
