Meet Mateo: A newborn giant anteater pup at the Nashville Zoo who is about the size of a half-gallon of milk.
Why Mateo matters: His birth on Sept. 17 advanced the Nashville Zoo's efforts to preserve the global population of giant anteaters.
The big picture: The Nashville Zoo has the largest collection of giant anteaters in human care in the U.S.
- Mateo was the 27th giant anteater born at the zoo since conservation efforts for the vulnerable species began there 25 years ago.
Fun fact: Immediately after a baby anteater is born, it climbs onto its mother's back and stays there for up to year.
