Commission OKs ballot question on Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway

Why it matters: If the measure survives legal challenges, Nashville voters could decide in August 2027 whether to eliminate racing at the fairgrounds and substitute affordable or workforce housing as a required use in the charter.

The intrigue: Speedway supporters claimed the process was tainted by forged signatures and misleading tactics by petition canvassers.

• Organizers disputed the allegations, saying canvassers were trained to explain the petition accurately and that they honored signature withdrawal requests they could verify. They characterized any misleading statements as isolated incidents.
• Commissioners said their job was to certify the signature count, not determine whether fraud occurred.

Yes, but: A pending lawsuit challenges the handling of requests to withdraw signatures.
