Millions of children had stocked bookshelves by the time they turned 5 thanks to Dolly Parton, but the Imagination Library was just one part of her sprawling philanthropic portfolio.
The big picture: The international icon, who died this week in Nashville, pumped massive amounts of money into several causes over the course of her life.
- Her most famous passion was literacy, but she also supported life-saving medical research, disaster relief and even quietly bought students their high school band uniforms.
- She often invested in the hills of Appalachia, where she sought to lift up communities like the one she grew up in.
⛰️ The My People Fund: When November 2016 wildfires devastated Gatlinburg, Parton led an effort to give affected families $1,000 per month for six months. That amount ultimately grew to $5,000.
- That didn't all come from Parton's wallet, but she used her foundation, celebrity and televised fundraising power to bankroll the fund.
- About 900 families received money.
💉 Vanderbilt University Medical Center: Parton made a habit of giving to VUMC over the years.
- In 2017, she gave $1 million to support Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital's pediatric cancer program. Her donation honored her niece Hannah, who had received years of leukemia treatment there.
- In 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Parton famously put $1 million toward vaccine research. Her donation supported the development and testing of the Moderna vaccine.
- In 2022, she was back with another $1 million to support research into pediatric infectious diseases.
Zoom out: She also led efforts to improve healthcare in Sevier County. And earlier this year, Knoxville's children's hospital was named after her following an undisclosed financial commitment that leaders described as "generational and transformational."
🌊 Helene flooding relief: After Hurricane Helene pummeled East Tennessee in 2024, Parton personally gave $1 million for relief efforts. Her East Tennessee businesses and Dollywood Foundation made additional donations.
- She also put $1 million toward North Carolina recovery, which came from a charitable fund Jeff Bezos entrusted to her.
📚 Nashville library: In 2024, Parton's foundation gave $4.5 million to support the Nashville Public Library's early literacy program.
Reality check: This is just a small sample of Parton's giving.
Between the lines: She often used her celebrity to amplify her impact, encouraging others to join her.
Flashback: In 2022, she launched an initiative that gave Dollywood employees time off to volunteer.
"I think it's important for everyone to do their share to help their fellow man," she said at the time, per the AP.
- "I never quite understood why we have to let religion and politics and things like that stand in the way of just being good human beings. I think it's important from that standpoint just to feel like you're doing your part, doing something decent and good and right."
