The Metro Council signed off at its Tuesday meeting on Mayor Freddie O'Connell's plan to acquire the property next to the Nashville Zoo where a controversial data center project is planned.
Why it matters: The plan represents a bold maneuver to prevent the unpopular data center proposal, but it also comes with significant financial risk for the city.
Between the lines: The legislation authorizes city officials to acquire the land through eminent domain or negotiation. DC Blox closed on the $23 million purchase of the property, and is certain to argue the property is worth much more than that.
It was valued last year at $37 million by Assessor's Office.
What he's saying: "I'm glad Metro Council passed our legislation that gives us the option to acquire property next to the zoo for a number of public needs," O'Connell said through a spokesperson. "We're working closely with our Finance and General Services departments to plan for the site."
