Tennessee Titans to honors Chris Johnson in opener

Chris Johnson will be inducted into the Titans ring of honor during halftime of the team's opening game on Sept. 13 against the Jets.

Why it matters: The ring of honor is hallowed space for the Titans, a tribute reserved for the most legendary players in team history.

• Johnson will join 19 previous inductees into the ring of honor.

State of play: Johnson revealed last month that he's been diagnosed with ALS.

• He's already turned the diagnosis into activism by reviving the ice bucket challenge fundraising effort.

Flashback: Johnson was one of the most dynamic and mesmerizing players in Titans history. Powered by explosive speed, Johnson rushed for 7,965 yards with the Titans.

• His 2009 season stands as one of the greatest campaigns ever by an offensive player. Johnson rushed for 2,006 yards and finished with 2,509 total yards from scrimmage, which remains an NFL record.
• The accomplishment earned him his nickname CJ2K.

Former Titans assistant coach and radio broadcaster Dave McGinnis will be posthumously inducted into the ring of honor at a home game later in the season.
