Tennessee lawmakers pitch plan for safer parks and greenways

Driving the news: The bill, from state Sen. Jeff Yarbro and state Rep. Jason Powell, both Democrats, directs state agencies to collaborate with local governments to create a comprehensive safety strategy that addresses design, lighting, maintenance, signage, surveillance and programming on parks and greenways.

• The legislation has the backing of the advocacy group Free to Move, which was created by Lokits's family members after her death.

What she's saying: "If passed, the bill would affirm Tennessee as a pioneer in establishing a nationwide standard for safer parks and greenways," Free to Move director Abby Lokits, Alyssa's sister-in-law, said in a press release.

Zoom out: Free to Move is also coordinating with Metro Parks and the Metro Council for safety audits of greenways in Nashville.

• Starting earlier this month, city officials meet with community members to evaluate different stretches of the city's 300-plus-mile greenway system.
