Vanderbilt Health CEO Jeff Balser will retire this year after nearly two decades at the helm of Nashville's biggest hospital.
Why it matters: The announcement yesterday signaled the search for a new leader at Vanderbilt Health, which is one of Tennessee's top employers.
State of play: Balser, who also serves as dean of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, will stay on the job until Dec. 31, according to a statement.
The big picture: Balser led Vanderbilt Health through a pivotal period of growth and expansion, as the medical center split off from Vanderbilt University and grew its regional footprint.
During his tenure, Vanderbilt Health became a world leader in organ transplants and complex procedures, as well as personalized medicine.
What they're saying: "Dr. Balser has led an era of remarkable growth in facilities, programs and services that will have a lasting impact on the lives of generations of patients and their families," Vanderbilt Health board chair Edie Carell Johnson said in a statement.
