Nashville Predators general manager Barry Trotz announced his retirement yesterday.
Why it matters: Trotz is one of the most consequential members of Predators leadership. He served as coach from 1998 until 2014, and then took over as GM in 2023.
The big picture: Trotz will stay on until his successor is selected. He'll also advise the Predators on the selection process.
Former Gov. Bill Haslam, the Predators' owner, said new minority partner Nick Saban will also help pick the new GM.
Haslam said the change was not about Trotz's job performance. The Preds (25-23-6, 56 points) are pushing for a spot in the NHL playoffs.
What he's saying: Trotz indicated the decision was about spending more time with his family.
"I love the game and I love my family," Trotz said, according to the Tennessean. "But [my family] deserves whatever time I have on earth left. They deserve that."
