The Nashville Banner, a nonprofit news organization that began daily publication last year, won a $1.2 million grant from the American Journalism Project.

Driving the news: The grant from the AJP will help fund business development initiatives, according to Banner president and editor Steve Cavendish.
The plan is to hire four new staffers "to drive audience growth, capture sponsorship opportunities, expand our membership program and strengthen our overall business operation," Cavendish says.
Just three outlets won grants from the American Journalism Project, which began investing in nonprofit newsrooms in 2019.
