"The Outsiders" comes to Nashville with hometown star

Zoom in: "The Outsiders," the 2024 Tony winner for best new musical, is an adaptation of a classic book and movie about a group of downtrodden outcasts growing up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1967.

• "We've got no parents, we fend for ourselves," White's character sings in the opening number.

The intrigue: White said he won his role when his mom took him to an open casting call in New York.

Flashback: The 19-year-old cut his teeth in musicals at Ensworth, where musical theater director Shawn Knight said "he was fearless and dove head-first into every artistic challenge put to him."

• White told the Williamson Scene his experience with gymnastics helped prepare him for a cinematic and bloody fight scene that takes place in the rain.

Fun fact: "The very first show I remember is when my mom took me to see 'The 101 Dalmatians' at TPAC, when I was maybe 5 or 6 years old," White said in the interview. "I really did not like Cruella de Vil, and I guess I yelled something out and made one of the performers break on stage."
