Metro Council members revive Black Caucus

Metro Council members are bringing back the legislative body's Black Caucus, which hasn't been active since 2011.

Why it matters: The Black Caucus "recognizes that there are issues unique to Black Nashvillians that require a more targeted focus," according to the group's press release.

Flashback: The Black Caucus' roots date back to 1951, when the city's first Black council members Z. Alexander Looby and Robert Lillard were elected.

The now-legendary duo fought for voting rights, public safety and education advancements.

Zoom in: The Black Caucus evolved into the Minority Caucus in 2011.

Metro Councilmember Jennifer Gamble will chair the Black Caucus, which has 11 members, according to a press release.
