With snowstorm coming, Nashville mayor says city is better prepared

Flashback: A year ago, Nashville was hit with a snowstorm followed by a deep freeze that created hazardous road conditions. Residents and some Metro Council members questioned the city's response.

The latest: O'Connell took to social media in November to assure residents the city will be better prepared this winter.

• In the wake of last year's storm, the city added more snowplows and expanded its snow removal map. The city added more secondary streets to the list of roads that will be plowed.
• A year ago, the city had plans to buy 37 new snowplows. Some of those will be added to the fleet, while others will replace existing trucks.

By the numbers: For the January 2024 storm, the city had 28 snowplows clearing roads. That number has increased to 40, according to a city spokesperson.

• The Nashville Department of Transportation is responsible for over 5,800 miles of roads. Of those, over 2,475 miles of roads are on the updated snow removal map.

What he's saying: "This year we're even more prepared as the city has more plows on more routes connecting to more neighborhoods," O'Connell said in November.

The forecast: The National Weather Service says the snow will begin falling Friday morning and road conditions are anticipated to worsen from late morning until early evening.

• There is a 50% to 80% chance of four inches of snow or more, according to the forecast.
