National tour of the musical "Shucked" stops in Nashville

"Shucked," the pun-packed Broadway musical with a country twang, is playing at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center.

Why it matters: The Nashville performances, which run through Nov. 10, are a homecoming of sorts. Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, two of Music Row's most decorated songwriters, wrote the show's music and lyrics.

State of play: The Tony-winning musical is about a small town where life revolves around corn and a lead character (aptly named Maizy) who sets out to save the community's dying crops.

It's an intentionally silly romp packed with dad jokes and corn cob choreography.

Zoom in: Before Clark and McAnally brought "Shucked" to Broadway in 2023, they collaborated on country hits like "Follow Your Arrow," "Mama's Broken Heart" and "Better Dig Two."

The intrigue: A New York Times profile noted that singer Jake Owen saw the theatrical potential in the songwriters' early work.

"He said to me, 'Those sound like songs from musicals,'" McAnally told the Times.
