Nashville's Gretchen Walsh wins two golds at 2024 Olympics

Swimmer Gretchen Walsh won two Olympic gold medals over the weekend.

State of play: The Nashville native and Harpeth Hall graduate was part of the United States' winning team in the mixed 4x100-meter medley relay on Saturday. She took gold again on Sunday with the women's 4x100-meter medley relay team.

Both teams set world records, and Sunday's victory gave the U.S. its eighth swimming gold of the Olympic Games — one more than rival Australia.

The intrigue: Walsh said her Saturday swim was in honor of her sister, fellow Olympic swimmer Alex Walsh, who had been disqualified after finishing third in the 200-meter individual medley.

NBC reported Alex Walsh was disqualified for an illegal turn during her race, which happened shortly before the mixed relay.

What she's saying: "I'm just devastated. I think that Alex deserves so much," Gretchen Walsh said, per NBC.

"She's worked so hard and I don't really know how to put that into words. It's really sad, but I know that she'll be back and better than ever."
