Podcast preaches importance of dental checkups

The latest episode of "Public Service Announcement," a podcast hosted by Meharry Medical College president James E.K. Hildreth, featured a discussion of the importance of regular dental checkups.

State of play: Hildreth noted that more than $45 billion is lost in productivity nationwide every year because of untreated oral disease, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Fun fact: Dentists can be the front line for many health concerns. Your mouth can offer early warnings about high blood pressure, diabetes and Alzheimer's, among other conditions, Cherae Farmer-Dixon, the dean of Meharry's School of Dentistry, said.
