Southern Grist beer makes national best-of list
A beer made by the quirky brewing masterminds at Southern Grist has been named one of the best in the entire country.
Driving the news: Beer and Brewing unveiled its list of the top 20 beers for 2023, and Southern Grist's gin barrel-aged Perpetual Composition was among those honored.
Why it matters: It's another feather in the cap for Nashville's growing craft brewery scene, and well-deserved recognition for Southern Grist.
Zoom in: Southern Grist touts itself for pushing boundaries and challenging palettes for beer enthusiasts. Their taprooms, located in the Nations and East Nashville, are known for offering more than your standard IPAs and light lagers.
- For instance, one of their new beers released last week in time for the holidays is called Crispmas and is brewed with freshly harvested spruce tips, juniper needles and juniper berries.
What they're saying: "Aging beer in gin barrels used to be a dodgy niche. In recent years, however, some beautifully refined examples — particularly in the mixed-culture realm — have widened our views entirely," the Beer and Brewing article says in its write-up.
- "Now it's Southern Grist's deeply impressive hybrid creation, which spent nine months in a Bordeaux [barrel] and eight more in gin casks."
