Here's what U.S. Rep. Jim Banks said onstage at the Republican National Convention

• He's stayed in lockstep with Donald Trump and could be a strong ally in the Senate if both are elected.

What he's saying: "We need President Trump back in the White House if we're going to make America great once again," Banks said in his 4-minute speech. "Ladies and gentlemen, he's going to need backup in the United States Senate."

• "This is no time for wimpy Republicans. That's why I'm running."

State of play: Banks, 45, has represented northeast Indiana in Congress since 2017.

• He was unopposed in the GOP primary to succeed Sen. Mike Braun, who is running for governor.
• Banks faces Democrat Valerie McCray and Libertarian Andrew Horning in November.

Between the lines: Banks was given a primetime speaking slot, despite the fact that he's expected to easily win his Senate race and Trump already has Indiana in the bag.

• He was preceded onstage by representatives from swing states like Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona and Pennsylvania and part of a slate of speakers who have served in the military.

Zoom in: Banks spoke for Indiana during the roll call vote of the state delegations Monday, pledging the state's 58 delegates to Trump.

• He told Axios on Monday that Trump is more popular in Indiana than ever before.

What's next: RNC programming will continue throughout the week. Trump is scheduled to speak Thursday.
