Letitia Plummer begins transition as Harris County judge-elect

• "I am judge-elect to every person in this county, whether they could vote, couldn't vote or didn't vote."

Zoom in: Plummer, the first Black woman and first Muslim elected Harris County judge, said she was "raised in a family where service was my calling."

• "My grandfather argued for civil rights when justice was hard to win. My grandmother taught children to believe in who they could become, and their courage is the ground that I stand on," she says.
• She hopes young girls across Harris County will see her election as "a beacon of what is possible in their own lives."

What's next: Plummer said she spoke with Houston Mayor John Whitmire after her victory and says she hopes to strengthen city-county collaboration, particularly on infrastructure projects.

• She has also met with outgoing County Judge Lina Hidalgo and plans to meet with county department heads, emergency managers and her transition team before she takes office Jan. 1.
