Letitia Plummer wins Harris County judge race

• Plummer, a dentist by trade, is the first Black person and first Muslim elected to the role.

By the numbers: Plummer cruised to victory over Sanchez, winning 61% of the vote to his 39%, according to unofficial results from the Harris County Clerk's Office.

What they're saying: "I am standing in front of you as a reminder that we are the living embodiment of hope," Plummer said in her victory speech early Tuesday night.

"This victory is proof that America's greatest promise is not simply what it has been, but what we still have the power to become."

Between the lines: Plummer's campaign focused on her city council record, highlighting her progressive policy work on housing, public safety and immigration.

Flashback: Plummer's path to victory began with an upset in May, when she narrowly defeated former Houston Mayor Annise Parker, who had been considered the Democratic front-runner.

Zoom out: Democrats have held the Harris County judge seat since 2018, when Lina Hidalgo, who chose not to seek a third term, unseated Republican Ed Emmett.

• Democratic Commissioners Adrian Garcia and Lesley Briones won reelection, preserving Democrats' majority on Harris County Commissioners Court.
