The percentage of U.S. adults drinking alcohol has dropped to a new low as health officials keep an eye on Iowa's historically high consumption.
Why it matters: While the new data don't break down consumption by state, past Iowa-specific studies have shown the Hawkeye State has some of the highest binge and heavy drinking rates in the nation, which contributes to cancer risks.
By the numbers: Over half (54%) of U.S. adults this year reported having alcoholic beverages on occasion, according to Gallup data released last week
Since 2023, the percentage of adults under 35 who reported drinking has decreased by nine percentage points, from 59% to 50%.
State of play: The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services warned last month that drinking more than two alcoholic beverages a day for men and one for women is excessive.
The intrigue: As alcohol consumption declines nationally, the nonalcoholic beverage sector has boomed.
