Gray's Lake project clears final fundraising hurdle

Des Moines is moving forward with an estimated $2.4 million playground and sprayground project at Gray's Lake Park.
Why it matters: The project, whose construction depended on being fully funded through donations or grants, will expand recreational access without using taxpayer dollars.
Catch up quick: Gray's Lake Park is one of the most visited parks in the city, and plans to replace its playground have been in progress for years.
- City officials announced shortly before his death last year that the project would be named in honor of Rick Neumann Jr., an attorney and local philanthropist who led the fundraising efforts.
Flashback: Neumann's family owned a sand and gravel business at Gray's Lake before it became a park more than 50 years ago.
Driving the news: The City Council on Monday agreed to seek bids for the project.
