What to make of the Browns' crowded quarterback room

The intrigue: The Browns shocked everyone on Saturday by taking polarizing Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round, much later than he was expected to go.

• The selection was even more shocking considering Cleveland took Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel two rounds earlier.

State of play: The Browns now have five quarterbacks on their roster in Gabriel, Sanders, Kenny Pickett, Joe Flacco and Deshaun Watson.

Between the lines: Uncertainty at the position starts with Watson, whose poor play and ruptured Achilles have put his future with the team in doubt.

• Watson's bloated contract has hampered Cleveland since trading for him in 2022.

💭 Troy's thought bubble: Flacco, who led the Browns to the playoffs in 2023 and re-signed with Cleveland this offseason, has to be the presumed starter.

• The Browns traded for Pickett this offseason. The 26-year-old has been considered a bust after the Steelers selected him No. 20 overall in the 2022 draft.
• Gabriel is an undersized pass thrower whom the Browns may have reached for.

• Sanders' drop suggests personal issues, but the potential to be a starter is there.

What they're saying: "It wasn't necessarily the plan going into the weekend to select two quarterbacks, but, you know, as we talk about, we do believe in best player available," Browns general manager Andrew Berry said following Day 3 of the draft.

• "We do believe in positional value. And we didn't necessarily expect [Sanders] to be available in the fifth round."

The bottom line: As NFL coaching legend John Madden once said, "If you have two quarterbacks, you actually have none."

• Decisions must be made.
