Somerville voters weigh change as two city councilors vie for mayor

State of play: City Councilor Jake Wilson won 42% of votes in the prelim, followed by fellow councilor Willie Burnley Jr. with 34%.

Burnley has campaigned as a lived-experience candidate who has gone through the housing and economic crunch of the city.

• He's very much of the "new Somerville" — a self-identified democratic socialist, queer and polyamorous.

What's next: Tuesday's election will determine whether Burnley becomes Somerville's first Black mayor and first openly queer mayor, or if Wilson's management background is enough for voters seeking operational improvements.
