State of play: Nearly 1.7 million people in Massachusetts cast their ballots during early voting, either through mail-in ballots or in-person, William Galvin, secretary of the commonwealth, said Monday. 

• Galvin projects Massachusetts will exceed its 2020 record of 3.7 million voters this year. 

Pro tip: If you still have a mail-in ballot, do not mail it.

• A mailed ballot is still valid if it's postmarked by Tuesday, but it has to reach the clerk's office by Friday to be counted, Galvin says. 
• Your best move is to place a mail-in ballot in a drop box. 
• Do not try to leave it at a polling place; it won't be accepted there.
