Atlanta's Stitch project reveals new plans for Downtown park

Driving the news: The nonprofit Atlanta Downtown Stitch Inc. unveiled new renderings during an event Thursday at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights attended by civic, business and neighborhood leaders.

Zoom in: The revised plans for the area near Peachtree Street and Ralph McGill Boulevard emphasize an indoor-outdoor pavilion, café and central green.

By the numbers: The three-phase vision for The Stitch costs an estimated $713 million and would add roughly 17 acres of park and public space along a three-quarter-mile stretch of the Downtown Connector.

• The project's first phase is estimated to cost roughly $200 million and envisions roughly 5 acres of park space.

The project could help alleviate Downtown flooding by capturing, storing and reusing 3 million gallons of water a year, Atlanta Downtown Stitch Inc. president and CEO Jack Cebe told the Atlanta Business Chronicle.

Flashback: The project was one of many infrastructure initiatives forced to revisit plans after the Trump administration rescinded $151.4 million in federal funding awarded under former President Biden.

What's next: Project leaders plan to apply for a new $60 million federal grant, the Chronicle reports.

• Cebe told the outlet that officials have secured roughly $50 million in funding for design and construction.

Work on the highway cap is contingent on securing additional funding.
