CHaRM to start accepting vapes for recycling

If you (no judgement) take your last pull from your vape and aren't sure what to do with the pen or cartridge, the Center for Hard to Recycle Materials is coming to the rescue.

Why it matters: You can't throw away vapes as you do your household trash, as their lithium-ion batteries, materials and oils are harmful to the environment.

The latest: Live Thrive, the nonprofit that runs CHaRM, said in a press release it will start accepting vapes for disposal starting Oct. 1 through a partnership with Novus Solutions LLC.

How it works: Novus, a Marietta-based company, will use a process that will dismantle, shred and separate materials so the vapes can be safely recycled.

By the numbers: It will cost $1 per vape that weigh less than one pound. If it exceeds that weight, you will be charged $3.50 per additional pound.

What they're saying: Live Thrive said in a press release the program "provides a responsible disposal option that helps reduce the risk associated with improper vape disposal."

"While Live Thrive does not endorse the use of vapes or tobacco products, the organization recognizes that their increasing prevalence has created environmental and public safety concerns," it said.

The fine print: Live Thrive is also teaming up with Friends of Disabled Adults and Children to accept gently used medical items like wheelchairs, shower chairs, walkers and adaptive equipment at CHaRM DeKalb.

The collected items will be cleaned, refurbished and distributed to adults and children in need.
