Atlanta's unpaid water bill tab swells to $236 million

• Almost one-quarter of the city's active water accounts are delinquent, and most delinquent accounts are residential, the report said.
• Households and businesses that pay their bills bear the financial burden, the auditor said.

Zoom in: The Camelot Club Condominiums was the largest delinquent account holder classified as residential as of April 2026, owing $3.2 million, the audit said.

• An entity called VCP Medical Partners LLC owed the most among commercial account holders ($2.7 million) as of that date, according to the document.
• Others behind on their water and sewer bills included governments and agencies, a university, a data center company, an upscale mixed-use center and a fast-food chain location.

The big picture: City Council member Dustin Hillis, who chairs the utilities committee, called the outstanding balances "deeply, deeply troubling."

• Hillis and the auditor said city and Atlanta Department of Watershed Management officials should consider more shut-offs, payment plans and attempts to collect past-due amounts earlier on.
