Atlanta startup wants to make sumo America's next arena sport

Zoom in: Former Turner Broadcasting executive and WWE president Stuart Snyder and Toper Taylor, an Emmy-winning producer and former William Morris Agency (now Endeavor) talent agent, are launching the league.

• The duo think they can package the sport into a family-friendly competition that can capture American audiences.
• That means seasons, rankings, prize money, championship battles, arena-style entrances and rivalries.

Yes, but: Don't expect scripted storylines parroting pro wrestling, Snyder told Axios.

• The league will respect the rules and traditions from Japan, Snyder said, from the dohyō (the ring where wrestlers, or rikishi, compete) to the leg-stamping shiko ritual.

The big picture: We are living in a golden age of startup sports leagues, Snyder said.

• Audiences are fragmenting thanks to streaming platforms, and live sports remain "[t]he one thing that still gathers an audience and compels an audience to watch something in real time," he said.

What's next: The league is recruiting sumo wrestlers in Japan and elsewhere while also scouting American sumo clubs, former football players, wrestlers and other crossover athletes.

• Snyder notes that bigger isn't always better, so smaller-framed athletes are welcome to compete.

The first competition is scheduled to be held in fall 2026, Snyder said.
