New public art coming to park that will anchor The Stitch in Atlanta

• The unveiling will be held at Mayor's Park, the site of a planned 17-acre green space that will cover the interstate.
• The community event will include food from El Tesoro and a chance to watch the installation happen at sunset.

What they're saying: The art is designed to highlight connectivity and the "theme of stitching the city together," said Jack Cebe, development manager at The Stitch.

• Farr said his work, titled "What We Weave," was inspired by a handmade quilt his aunt gave him for his wedding.
• "That felt deeply aligned with The Stitch and the project's vision of bringing Atlanta together," Farr said, referring to the quilt's patterns. "As the sculpture moves through light and color, and people speak into it via the interactive gramophone, I hope it creates moments of reflection and curiosity as a visual reminder of the neighborhood's brighter, more connected future."

Catch up quick: Once complete, The Stitch will reconnect majority-Black neighborhoods severed in the 1940s and '50s by the interstate highway system and spur redevelopment on Downtown's northern edge.

• In 2024, the U.S. Department of Transportation's Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods grant program awarded $157.6 million toward the project's first phase.

• However, President Trump's tax and spending legislation, which he signed into law in July 2025, slashed $151 million in grant funding from the first phase of the project.
• Cebe told Axios The Stitch officials are working with the city and other partners to fill in the gap.
• The first phase of The Stitch calls for building a new park over the interstate and includes about 8 miles of street improvements in the area north of Downtown.
• Cebe said construction on the first phase will begin in 2027.
