⚾️ The time Ted Turner manned the Braves dugout

On May 11, 1977, the Braves owner put on a uniform and named himself manager after a brutal 16-game losing streak.

• He coached a single game — a defeat against the Pittsburgh Pirates. MLB rules prohibited team owners from managing their teams.

"If I'm smart enough to buy the team, I ought to be smart enough to manage it," Turner said after the defeat.

• "This is like a game to me. This is just a big Little League team."

⛵️ "Captain Outrageous" and Courageous

Sailing played a significant part in Turner's life, and in 1977 he skippered a yacht called Courageous to a prestigious America's Cup championship.

• His brash public persona earned him the nickname "Captain Outrageous" and helped make him a Sports Illustrated cover subject.

🦬 Saving the American bison by convincing people to eat it

Turner funded conservation efforts and made the American bison a more mainstream meat option thanks to his Ted's Montana Grill chain.

• He became the owner of the world's largest private bison herd and one of the most prominent private figures in the modern recovery of the species.

✌️ That "doomsday video"

Turner once joked that CNN would be on the air until the end of the world, "barring satellite problems."

• He even commissioned the network to produce a video that would run whenever that moment arrived — just in case.
• The philanthropist pledged more than $1 billion to fund peace-building programs and nuclear disarmament efforts to prevent that day from coming.

🏙️ Downtown champion

Turner's decision to locate CNN in Downtown helped fuel the local economy and give tourists a place to visit.

• Turner, who had a home above the Downtown Ted's location, once said he would sometimes walk around the block picking up litter.
• He added solar panels to the parking lot he owned, adjacent to the Luckie Street building.
