Georgia politics never really sleeps — and neither does Greg Bluestein, the AJC's chief political reporter.
- Bluestein starts his day at 6am with headlines in bed, keeps tabs via messages and unwinds with, you guessed it, a long run.
📲 First tap of the day: Bluestein scans the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Punchbowl News, Axios newsletters (of course) and the AJC (also of course).
- He turns to Haaretz when he wants Middle East news, which he follows more closely after Hamas' Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel.
💻 Throughout the day: Bluestein, who also co-hosts the AJC's Politically Georgia podcast and is an NBC and MSNOW analyst, doesn't get to check many headlines or scan X (formerly Twitter) until he sits down for lunch.
- During the day he mainly leans on sources to help keep tabs on what's breaking or bubbling up.
📺 Currently streaming: "I'm streaming 'Fallout' right now," Bluestein, the author of "Flipped," a 2022 book about Georgia's changing political landscape, says.
- "They turned a video game I've never played into a series. It's really good. It's so weird."
He's also deep into deep shows, like Apple TV's "Pluribus" and, while working out, less heady content like "Landman."
- "I can zone out easily," he says. "I don't feel like I'm missing some crazy plot point."
💬 Messaging service: Bluestein keeps in contact with sources using Signal on both his phone and laptop, plus WhatsApp and good old-fashioned text messaging and group chats.
- "Certain high-profile lawmakers are obsessed with Signal," he says. "They will not do anything else."
🎵 Playlist: His workout mix is heavy on the '80s and The Boss is the soundtrack of his life. "Bruce is my outlet," Bluestein says. "I'll listen to his channel on SiriusXM all the time."
- "I'll listen to Wrecking Ball or something like that," he says. "I'm like, 'Oh man, this guy gets me.'"
🎙️ Podcasts: "I'm a crazy history buff," he says. Bluestein loves Dan Carlin's Hardcore History epics and The Rest Is History. He also listens to The Daily, 99% Invisible and BBC Documentaries.
- "I just want to hear all about Thomas Aquinas or whatever," he says.
📱 Most used app: Bluestein has jumped into the wild world of TikTok, much to the embarrassment of his kids.
- "It's the lamest account," he says. "It's me yelling 'It's your boy blue' [in public]... and they're like, rolling their eyes at me."
📚 Bedside table: "I'm reading 'Sapiens' again," he says of Yuval Noah Harari's bestseller. "It teaches a different way to look at life and humanity and evolution."
🏃 Unplug: Bluestein hits the treadmill or the pavement (his social media chronicles his readiness to run a 5K).
- He and his teenage daughter like to hit the gym together before he drops her off at school.
