MARTA is replacing the equipment used to collect fares from riders.
Why it matters: The transit authority said its system will still be called Breeze, but payment cards and tickets, fare gates, fare box validators, vending machines and the mobile app will all undergo a redesign.
The cost for a one-way trip will remain $2.50.
A MARTA spokesperson said the project will cost $317 million.
The latest: New equipment for the Better Breeze system has been installed at MARTA's Lindbergh Center and Doraville stations.
MARTA said in a press release that the new fare gates will be harder to damage or tamper with, and they can be monitored and adjusted remotely.
It will also allow for the gates to be remotely monitored and adjusted, which can reduce incidents of people not paying fares.
Current breeze cards and the existing mobile app will not work with the new system, and more details on how to obtain updated cards and new app be released in the spring, MARTA said.
What's next: MARTA said the new equipment will be installed in phases, and customers should be mindful of signs that indicate which fare gates are open or closed.
