ELEVATE festival brings Atlanta's cultural heritage to a street near you

Why it matters: "The stage is literally the streets," said Adriane Jefferson, Atlanta's executive director of the Office of Cultural Affairs. "The stage can literally be block parties. The stage can happen anywhere."

What they're saying: This year's theme, Rooted & Rising, pays respect to the city's past, specifically how Atlanta's culture during the 1980s and 2000s shaped the city, Jefferson told Axios.

• For example, a pop-up gallery will include artwork that explores the "Old Atlanta" of the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s.
• "So the way we're looking at this particular festival, this year's theme is to bridge the gap between that newer generation and that older generation," Jefferson said.

Zoom in: Jefferson said at least 50 to 60 artists will participate in the festival, which will also include a hair show and a health market.

• Attendees will also have a chance to get in a HIIT workout, participate in dance classes and unwind with a yoga session.

• If you're into crafting, beginner-friendly cobbling and pottery classes are on the docket.

The big picture: ELEVATE will also provide an opportunity for artists, residents and stakeholders to talk about changes happening across city neighborhoods, particularly the West End, "and how do we embrace preservation while also embracing the evolution of the future," Jefferson said.
