Georgia to deploy hundreds of National Guard soldiers to D.C.

The latest: In a statement, Kemp said 16 support staff and about 300 soldiers will be stationed in and around Washington, D.C.

• The soldiers relieve other service members who have been in D.C. since the start of Trump's deployment.
• Kemp's office says they will begin mobilizing later this month and will be "on active duty in Washington shortly thereafter."
• The 16 support soldiers will lend a hand to medical and military police staff at D.C.'s Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, and "are not expected to have any direct interaction with civilians," the governor's office said.

Catch up quick: President Trump on Aug. 11 announced he would send in the national guard and federalize the district's police department after claiming D.C. was "one of the most dangerous cities anywhere in the world," despite violent crime being at a 30-year low.

• National Guard members based in Washington, D.C., the past few weeks have been seen picking up trash and taking photos with tourists, but the president attributes a decline in violent crime to their presence, Axios' Carrie Shepherd reports.

Threat level: Trump has said it's a question of "when" he will send the national guard to Chicago, and is considering the same move to "straighten out" New Orleans.

The intrigue: A federal judge ruled last Tuesday that the Trump administration illegally instructed the National Guard to perform law enforcement activities during anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles, Axios' Avery Lotz reports.
