The heart of Downtown Atlanta finally has a real-deal grocery store.
Driving the news: Mayor Andre Dickens yesterday celebrated the opening of Azalea Fresh Market, a partnership between the city, Invest Atlanta and Savi Urban Provisions.
Zoom in: The store is located in the former Walgreens on the ground floor of the historic Olympia Building.
Why it matters: Area residents have poor access to fresh food and vegetables. Meanwhile, developers are investing billions of dollars building housing and retail around the market.
Having fresh food and groceries within walking distance helps thousands of neighbors lead healthier lives and lures new residents.
Fun fact: In the 1840s, Moses Formwalt, Atlanta's first mayor, operated a tin and sheet metal shop where the Olympia now stands.
