The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets had the highest average number of penalties per game among college football programs in the state, data from the Action Network shows.
Driving the news: The betting site tracked penalties per game for every Division I college football program over the past five seasons.
- The national average was 5.97 infractions per contest.
By the numbers: Tech (6.32) is the only school in Georgia that ranks above the national average, followed by the Georgia State Panthers (5.9), Georgia Southern Eagles (5.2) and University of Georgia Bulldogs (5).
- The Kennesaw State University Owls, which has only played within the Conference USA grouping for one year, drew a ranking of 5.7 from its 2024 season.
Between the lines: As of Aug. 11, UGA (No. 5) was the only Georgia team ranked in the AP's Top 25 College Football Poll.
Zoom out: The Blazers of the University of Alabama at Birmingham averaged the most penalties (7.96) per contest.
The intrigue: Air Force (3.76), Iowa (3.92) and Army (3.98) were the only schools to average less than four penalties per game.
The big picture: The SEC (6.5), to which the Bulldogs belong, ranks the highest when it comes to average penalties per game in the last five seasons. It's closely followed by Tech's conference, the ACC (6.4).
- The Big Ten conference, which includes Iowa and the last two national champions (Ohio State and Michigan), has been the least penalized.
The bottom line: Clean play isn't everything, but winning teams don't have to break the rules.
