Huff Road could soon be friendlier for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers

Catch up quick: Once dominated by industrial uses, the Huff Road corridor in the Blandtown neighborhood became one of Atlanta's hidden gems for furniture and fabric before it morphed into a development success story.

• Today, a Beltline trail segment is planned along the community's northern edge. The city reservoir is located to the east, along Howell Mill Road, and mixed-use, retail and housing have sprouted throughout.

Zoom in: Led by the Upper Westside Community Improvement District, the study is proposing wider sidewalks, green infrastructure to handle stormwater and a parallel bicycle and pedestrian bridge over railroad tracks.

• A path along the Water Works reservoir would connect to a redesigned, bike-friendly Howell Mill Road.
• The concept plan makes the most of the narrow corridor without widening the road, Adeline Collot, Upper Westside CID's program director, told Axios.

State of play: The district is considering streetscape improvements and signal changes at Marietta Boulevard to slow down drivers and improve traffic flow.

What's next: The Upper Westside CID will post an updated study online in the coming weeks, an Atlanta Department of City Planning spokesperson told Axios.

• The Atlanta City Council and Mayor Andre Dickens could vote on the concepts as early as September, followed by public input, fundraising and construction.
