Decatur auctions off polarizing planters as West Howard gets a makeover

A colorful chapter in Decatur's transportation history can be yours.

Driving the news: The city is auctioning off the orange, teal and pink oversized planters that used to separate bicyclists and motorists on West Howard Avenue.

Catch up quick: On July 16, the city removed nearly 200 planters for a $1.9 million redo of the road that includes a two-way cycle track and landscaped islands. (PDF)

Zoom in: The hulking barricades have a built-in reservoir system, UV protection and "vandal resistant," according to the auction listing.

The intrigue: The planters, some of which sat empty for long periods of time, were one of the most polarizing issues in historically simpatico Decatur.

Caveat: The planters have survived severe weather and car crashes, so don't expect your purchase to look brand new.

What's next: The online auction ends at 11:59pm ET on July 24.
