The Atlanta Fringe Festival is back for its 13th year, bringing what organizers describe as artist-centered "experimental and boundary-pushing performances" to several venues across the city.
Why it matters: For the first time, the performance art festival will include a second week of shows for audiences expecting the unexpected.
- Artists will also be able to keep all of the proceeds generated from ticket sales.
The latest: The festival runs through June 8 and includes dozens of performances at 10 venues, including Metropolitan Studios, Limelight Black Box, 7 Stages and Dynamic El Dorado.
What they're saying: "Atlanta Fringe Festival isn't just about pushing artistic boundaries — it's about bringing people together," executive director Diana Brown said in a press release. "Our city thrives on creativity, and this festival is a place where artists and audiences connect, celebrate, and inspire each other. We're proud to showcase bold, original performances that reflect the heart and soul of Atlanta."
Zoom in: Dozens of performers from around the country will take the stage (or sidewalk) with a variety of shows, including Don Toberman: Ping Pong Champ, the Mark & David Show! and 40.4.40 (The Hip Hop Musical for Dreamers).
- Kids Fringe, which is free and held in partnership with the East Atlanta Kids Club, will be held 10am to 1pm May 31 and June 1 and June 7-8.
- Atlanta Street Fringe, a free outdoor festival held in conjunction with the Little 5 Points Business Association, takes place May 31 and June 1 and June 7-8 around the neighborhood.
- If you'd rather enjoy Fringe in a more solitary way, you can check out Fringe Audio where you'll hear a variety of shows, ranging from comedy and horror to sci fi and family-friendly content.
One fun thing: The variety benefit show, a favorite of Fringe Festival audiences, takes place at 7:30pm Monday, June 2. This year's theme is 90s sci-fi film "The Fifth Element."
- The local spin, "Five/5ths of The Fifth Element," divides the movie up into five parts where "audiences will see the most unique and supergreen re-telling of all-time with puppets, burlesque, clowning and more," the festival said.
