Abortion support nonprofit launches Georgia-targeted ads

A nonprofit that helps cover travel costs for people seeking abortions this week launched an advertising campaign in Georgia.

Why it matters: Georgia's law, which bans abortions at six weeks, has come under intense scrutiny after 11 Alive first reported that a brain-dead pregnant woman was being kept alive by doctors until her fetus can survive outside the womb.

The closest state that allows abortions beyond six weeks — and that doesn't require a waiting period, which can further complicate travel logistics — is Virginia, around 470 miles from Atlanta.

Driving the news: In Georgia, two static billboards will run across metro Atlanta for one month.

On Monday, mobile billboard trucks advertising The Brigid Alliance were driven around universities and crisis pregnancy centers in Atlanta.

Between the lines: Brigid doesn't pay for the procedure itself, according to its website.

Rather, it points users to the National Network of Abortion Funds and the National Abortion Federation.

Zoom out: The organization also rolled out campaigns in Florida and Louisiana.

Patients from those states and Georgia account for nearly a third of its clients across the country, the Brigid Alliance said.
